Most bridges and civil engineering structures attract pigeons. Basically, the structure mimics the natural roosting and nesting sites normally used by Rock Doves – the decedents of our modern Feral Pigeons. Bridges in particular have high, sheltered, dark ledges that are an ideal roosting and breeding ground.
In most cases, the problem can be accepted to a degree, however with a rising pigeon population, the mess and potential for spreading disease is a problem which cannot be ignored, especially where bridges are directly over footpaths, roads or railway tracks where the droppings can cause a nuisance and even a danger from slip hazards to the public or workers.
With many bridges undergoing cleaning and refurbishment across London and the Home Counties, it is vital to protect them from re-population. Money spent in refurbishment and cleaning cannot be wasted only to have the problem recur soon after the job is completed.
Rapid Environmental Services offer a complete cleaning and pigeon prevention service to clean up the potentially dangerous droppings, remove the current population and prevent further infestation and re-population of the structure.
In most cases, we recommend the use of a more permanent solution. Rather than using traditional nylon based netting structures, which more often than not are subject to vandalism, we usually propose the use of weld mesh as a bird prevention method.
Weld mesh is particularly suited to civil structures like bridges over roads or railway lines as they are low (or no) maintenance, long lasting and most importantly vandal proof, ensuring the investment made in cleaning and refurbishing a bridge or structure offers the best return in investment.
Working with pigeon protection and welfare groups, we will manage the whole operation of moving chicks and squabs, ensuring non-lethal methods are used where possible to satisfy all parties involved and ensure a smooth removal and relocation.
Rapid Environmental Services use multiple non-harmful scaring methods to deter pigeons during the operation to ensure no birds are trapped within the new netting structure or harmed during the transition period.
Our pigeon experts are available to offer advice on the most suitable pigeon prevention methods to ensure a simple and effective bird prevention system is installed and maintained.
