We normally get calls to go and deal with drug den clearances in pretty run down areas, generally in squats, but this call was different. When our client gave us the address I did think I actually took down the wrong one, or perhaps they had got the wrong file as this property was in a very nice area, a nice quite street not what I was expecting.
Anyway, we turned up on site to do a survey and saw a lovely house that I would not have associated with a drug den. The only real give away was the security system…it was so out of place that it was obvious whoever was inside did not want any unexpected visitors!
So inside the house (once passed the double security door) we saw the problem immediately. So the story goes, this place had been a drug dealer and prostitution house, and it looked like somebody wanted to get everything of value out before a police raid happened, so it was littered with all manner of things. Somebody also had strip searched the place, lifting carpets, ripping off cupboard doors etc…I guess they were looking for a drug or cash stash…who knows.
All we are interested in is clearing up the mess left and making it safe for other trades moving in to renovate this property ready for sale. As it happens, the previous owners must have spent loads of money on this house as the fittings were really nice – especially the kitchen which had top appliances and a marble top to the units.
One major concern when we take on a job like this is needles and drug paraphernalia. Needles are really scary and one slip means you are potentially infected with Hepatitis or HIV. We have strict processes that are drummed into our staff so incidents do not happen. Steve, our Ops Director, always does the first inspection, marking clearly areas of issue so we all know that this is a black area, one not to venture into without special PPE.
Once the initial sweep is done, tasks are allocated and the work can commence. Clearing each area of rubbish and mess is painstakingly done using grabs and tongs to minimise the risk of jabs from sharps. Most drug dens do tend to have “booby traps” waiting for those who follow. These can be needles in a light switch, taped under the banisters and door handles, or just stuck in chair upholstery…but you just don’t know so extreme caution is required at all times.
Only when we are completely happy the area is safe will the clean up begin. In terms of gross filth, this was not too bad, but in terms of just shear volume of rubbish and discarded belongings, this was pretty bad. We had enough rubbish to fill 2 skips with ease.
When a job is finally complete, we always like the client to come and sign off, making sure they are totally happy with everything we had done, so I am glad to say the reaction was just what we expected! They could not believe the difference made in such a short period of time, bringing back this run down and filth place back to a beautiful property.
