Since it was introduced into the UK in 2011, Bird Free Gel has become recognised throughout the UK as an effective, yet unobtrusive, bird control method: well-known installations sites include Covent Garden Market and Paddington Station in London, just to mention a few.
Bird Free Gel keeps all birds off all structures without harming them. It does so by altering their behaviour, not by acting as a physical barrier. Birds will completely desert a habitat, even one they have been using for years, once Bird Free Gel has been applied. Bird Free Gel is formulated so that birds won’t go near it: birds see ultraviolet light so it appears to them as fire. Visual deterrence is further reinforced by the selected food ingredients contained in Bird Free Gel, which are abhorrent to a bird’s senses of smell. The visual effect, whereby birds see Bird Free Gel as flames (leading to the name Fire Gel), is immediately evident following installation. Birds attempting to return to a habitat they have previously frequented will be observed veering off and landing elsewhere when they see the dishes of Bird Free Gel in place.
Clients should be aware, however, that some sites, particularly nesting sites and long-standing night roosts, are so attractive to birds that a few dominant birds may still attempt to return for a day or two after Bird Free Gel has been installed. If a dominant bird makes a serious attempt to return to the site immediately after Bird Free Gel has been installed it will be further deterred by the smell of the selected food ingredients therein. After a few days even the most dominant of birds will give up and the site will then be bird free.
Bird Free Gel is applied in clear plastic low-profile application dishes, only 8mm high. One of its distinct advantages is that it deters birds from landing even when these dishes are placed behind the leading edge of a parapet or ledge. This makes the dishes virtually invisible from ground level, thus preserving the aesthetic appearance of the building or structure, while at the same time keeping it clean.
Rapid Environmental Services utilise Bird Free Gel as an alternative to spiking and bird wire where appropriate, particularly in large structures like bridges or buildings with lower level ledges. The main reason is that, unlike spike systems, they do not trap wind borne rubbish like leaves and paper, nor do they trap things like cans and bottle behind or on them (a curse in a modern city), so negating the need for expensive removal and maintenance of structures.
Bird Free Gel has been particularly successfully used on many of the railway bridges we have been involved in the renovation of in London.
